"If you have faith the size of a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you."
(Matthew 17:20)

Recently I needed to buy a new backpack.

The one I had been using for years had finally given up. One of the straps had torn beyond repair, and it was clear that it had served its time well.

So, like most of us do today, I went online to look for a new one.

And that is where something interesting happened.

When you buy something online, you do not really hold the product in your hand. You only see pictures. So how do you decide?

You start reading the reviews.

How many stars does the product have?
How many people bought it?
What are people saying in the comments?
Did someone upload photos after using it?

Before long you realize something quite fascinating.

In today’s world, we often trust the reviews around the product more than the product itself.

And those reviews are written by strangers—people we have never met, people whose real names we may not even know. Yet we trust them enough to make decisions.

That thought stayed with me, because it brought me straight to a passage from the Gospel of John 4:46–54.

In this passage, we see Christ, a group of Galileans around Him, and a man approaching Him with urgency.

Saint John does not tell us very much about this man. But the Greek text suggests that he is a royal official, someone of position and standing in society. In other words, this is a man who likely had access to influence, resources, and the best help available in his time.

And yet his son is dying.

We do not know the age of the child. We do not know the illness. But the passage makes one thing clear: the father has come to believe that his child's life is slipping away.

At that point of desperation, when everything else seems to have failed, there must have been something else that came into his mind—a final hope.

He must have already heard about Jesus.

Not in the way we hear today, not through written accounts or structured teaching, but through people speaking, through stories traveling from one place to another—accounts of what had happened in Jerusalem, whispers of signs, and the possibility that this man could do what no one else could.

And it is from that place that his decision begins.

A man of influence, having exhausted what he could do, now turns toward what he has only heard.

And so he leaves his son behind and travels from Capernaum to Cana, a distance of nearly thirty miles.

In those days there were no quick journeys. Whether by walking or riding, it was still a serious and deliberate effort.

Why would a father leave a dying child to make such a journey?

Let us pause for a moment and consider that decision.

At that time, Jesus was not officially recognized as the Messiah. No authority had issued a declaration. There were no formal endorsements, no structured confirmations.

What existed was simply word of mouth.

People speaking about a man in Cana who could perform signs.

And for this father, that was enough.

So he sets out on that journey to find Jesus.

Now, if we pause for a moment and enter that journey with him, one can only imagine what must have been going through his mind. Would Jesus listen to him? Would he agree to come? Would his position make any difference? Or would he be turned away?

When he finally stands before Christ, the father speaks a single desperate sentence recorded in Scripture:

“Sir, come down before my child dies.” (John 4:49)

Behind that sentence lies the entire weight of a father's fear.

And then comes the response of Jesus:

“You may go; your son will live.” (John 4:50)

Just one sentence.

Now imagine that moment.

Suppose you went to a doctor and explained that you were in pain, and the doctor simply said, “You may go. Your pain will be gone.” Would you walk away completely confident?

Most of us probably would not.

But this father does something extraordinary.

He trusts the word of Jesus with the life of his son.

There is no way for him to know what is happening back home.

The only thing he can do is turn around and travel the thirty miles back to Capernaum, holding on to the hope that what Jesus said is true.

And somewhere along that road, his servants come running toward him with incredible news: his son is alive.

When the father asks about the time the child began to recover, he realizes something remarkable.

It happened at the exact hour Jesus spoke those words.

And in that moment, what began as a desperate journey turns into something more.

The Gospel tells us that he and his whole household came to believe (John 4:53).

Where it seemed like everything was coming to an end, something new had begun.

Where there appeared to be a full stop, God had already begun writing a new line.

Now, stepping back from that scene, when we read this passage today, many questions may arise in our minds.

Who exactly was this man?
What did he hear about Jesus that convinced him to make that journey?
What gave him the courage to trust a stranger with his son’s life?

Today we read these words surrounded by centuries of Christian faith and testimony.

But in that moment, this father had far less to rely on.

And yet he trusted.

Which brings us back to the words of Jesus:

“If you have faith the size of a mustard seed… nothing will be impossible for you.” - (Matthew 17:20)

A mustard seed is tiny—almost invisible.

And yet Jesus says that even such a small beginning of faith can move mountains.

So perhaps the question is not only about that father.

Perhaps the question is about us.

How big is your seed of faith today?
